11-28-16 Baby Grand

A child prodigy? It’s a little too soon to tell . . . (read more)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart began toying with the piano at the age of 3 and some say that at age 5 was not only playing competently, but also composing short pieces. Ibby (aka Irene Bernice Shephard), at 16 months, may well be on her way to besting Mozart. Who knows?

What she was playing had no discoverable melody and rhythm. But I’m no musician. Maybe she was playing some avant garde melody well ahead of her time. Or maybe not. Mozart was a tempestuous prodigy. I’ll take a happy-go-lucky toddler over that any day. 🙂

09-25-16 Ibby Outside

A brief pause for the perpetual motion machine. (read more)

Ibby (aka Irene Bernice) doesn’t sit still for my camera very often. And when she does, I’m lucky if I get one or two shots before she moves on. Such was the case yesterday during our informal portrait session in her back yard. The session lasted all of two minutes

At 14 months Ibby is a perpetual motion machine. She has little to say and yet she always seems to get what she wants and needs. And, of course, she’s amazing to watch.

My wife, Deb, asked me yesterday if I remembered that I had a photo blog that I used to post to once a day. And, yes, I did remember. She pointed out that I had plenty of good photos to share. And, I guess she’s right. So I’m back! At least for a day. . . .

It seems appropriate that I should return after close to a six week absence with a picture of the youngest member of the extended Shephard family. We know her these days as “Ibby,” though her full name is Irene Bernice.

And what can I say except that I think she’s beautiful. But what grandparent wouldn’t say that about one of their grandchildren?

I’ve never met grandparents who thought their grandchildren were anything but cute. And I’m one of them.

Irene Bernice has been plagued with ear problems that have kept her parents up most nights since she was born. And yet, during the day, and perhaps most importantly, when I’m around her, she is always charming. And cute. Of course!

04-21-14 Glenyce Jane – Easter, 2014

Glenyce Jane seems to be in perpetual motion but she does pause from time to time for photo opportunities. . . .

By Scott Shephard

We recently spent the better part of a day with out son Brian, daughter-in-law Katie, and our beautiful granddaughter Glenyce Jane. She is approaching her first birthday and I have discovered that when she is awake, she seems to be in constant motion, which makes her hard to photograph.

After her afternoon nap, Glenyce donned her brand new Easter dress, made by her grandmother Mary. We tried to pose her and I managed to get a few decent shots, though she seemed to be interested in any thing but my camera.

Glenyce Jane is perfect in every way, of course. What grandparent wouldn’t say that about their grandchild?

03-30-14 Curiosity (2004)

He peeks around the corner to get a better look at the American photographer. . . .

By Scott Shephard

Last Sunday I posted something from 2004 and I’m doing the same today, this time from another trip Deb and I took. Our son Brian was teaching English for a year in Japan in a program called JET and we spent a week there.

One of the schools he worked in was a pre-school and our visit is one of the more memorable travel experiences I have ever had. It was fun to watch the children as they went about their daily activities. But it was also fun to see how they interacted with Brian, whom they adored.

Their reaction to me and my camera was also interesting. In the US I think that our children are taught to to be suspicious of strangers. And strangers with cameras taking photos of children? Don’t even think about it!

But almost everyone I encountered in Japan, including children, we open and comfortable with my camera. In the US, a typical reaction to the candid photographer is a frown at best. But in Japan I was regularly greeted with smiles and peace signs.

In the case of this child, there is a cautious curiosity. It is one of my favorite photos from our wonderful week in Japan.

03-22-14 She Looks Up To Us

Granddaughter Glenyce has much to say long before she is able to speak.

by Scott Shephard

She looks up to us.

She is fascinated by us.

She trusts us.

She is amused by us.

She needs us.

Of course, I can’t really speak for our granddaughter Glenyce Jane. At 9 months she can’t yet speak for herself. But her eyes and her expressions have much to say . . . .
