09-26-16 Come to the Window

What I see when I say goodbye. . . (read more)

We had a great weekend helping son Brian take care of his two girls while wife and mother Katie was away for a short family trip. I have suggested that both kids tend to be moving targets but I’ve found that there are some places where they will stand still for a while. The front door is one of those places.

The window already had a few hand prints before we started taking photos but there were quite a few more when we were done.

07-26-16 Glamorous Glenyce

Glenyce couldn’t care less about “glam”. . . (read more)

This may be one of the first times that when I said, “Stand here because I’d like to take a picture,” Glenyce cooperated. Often, she says, “No” or just simply turns away from my camera.

When I posed her, I didn’t tell her how to look or how to stand. I did ask her to wait for the clouds to go over the morning sun so we would have softer light. She did. And we got this photo.

Is she glamorous? That’s the last word I’d want to apply to the bright, curious and sometimes impetuous 3 year old. Is she beautiful? I’m guessing that you may already know how I’d answer that question. . . .

07-10-16 Sister Act

We celebrated Irene Bernice’s 1st birthday and Glenyce enjoyed the event. . . (read and see more by seeing the blog)

We hosted Irene Bernice Shephard’s (left) 1st birthday party yesterday and a good time was had by all. There was much that made it a special day but grandmother Mary Brass made very special outfits for the grandchildren. And they were a colorful hit!

Glenny enjoys the view from her tiny, tiny house. . . . (read more)

For her third birthday, Glenyce Jane S. got a new house complete with sink, stove, cordless phone. The house is somewhere in size between an oversized doll’s house and a downsized tiny house of the kind you see on TV these days.

She likes her new house, of course, and has no trouble sharing the space with family members, me included. Though I have found it is easier to get in to the house than out.

02-18-16 Trio

Thanks, Katie, for keeping this tradition going. . .

How about a composite of three of my favorite people: Glenyce Jane, Deb DeGeest and Irene Bernice. All at around 6 months. All in the vintage dress that Deb wore 60 some years ago.

I wouldn’t have this photo if Katie hadn’t suggested that we needed to get a 6th month photo of Irene B, aka Ibby.

There are a few good things about Minnesota snow. (Read More)

By Scott Shephard

People in warm climates sometimes ask why people live in cold places like Minnesota, where this photo was taken. There are many answers, most of which are convincing to someone like me. First, it’s home and that’s generally where family is. Second, if everyone moved to warm climates, place like Honolulu, San Diego and Cancun would be more crowded than they already are. Third, I am concerned that the cold weather apparel and tool industries would collapse. (China’s economy is already a bit unsettled!)

A less convincing reason is that we have snow and warm places don’t. Yesterday, when I was watching Brian and Glenyce sled down the hill at Minnesota State Fair Grounds, I was thinking that they can’t do that in Hawaii. And sometimes, when I walk on freshly fallen snow and hear the crunch under my shoes, I think that someone who has lived in southern California their whole lives has no idea of what they’re missing.

And the good thing about snow in the upper plains states is that it will melt away sooner or later. Maybe in May . . . .

01-28-16 Don’t Forget Glenyce Jane!

The equal time rule suggests that I should post one of Glenny J.

By Scott Shephard

If Glenyce Jane has looked at my photo blog recently, she might notice that the score for 2016 is sister Irene 2, Glenyce 0. That could lead to all kinds of things, including sibling rivalry. And I wouldn’t want to be party to that.

The problem was than on the day we were set up for the studio photos you’ve seen recently, Glenyce was not exactly cooperative. If I had been a better photographer, I’m sure that I could have done better than I did. But this photo works. It was my idea to bring in another “member” of the family. The Cabbage Patch doll was a willing and relaxed subject. Glenyce, on the other hand, wasn’t interested in my camera. She did smile once but not at me. That’s OK because sometimes it’s better if the subject is unaware of the camera.

04-21-14 Glenyce Jane – Easter, 2014

Glenyce Jane seems to be in perpetual motion but she does pause from time to time for photo opportunities. . . .

By Scott Shephard

We recently spent the better part of a day with out son Brian, daughter-in-law Katie, and our beautiful granddaughter Glenyce Jane. She is approaching her first birthday and I have discovered that when she is awake, she seems to be in constant motion, which makes her hard to photograph.

After her afternoon nap, Glenyce donned her brand new Easter dress, made by her grandmother Mary. We tried to pose her and I managed to get a few decent shots, though she seemed to be interested in any thing but my camera.

Glenyce Jane is perfect in every way, of course. What grandparent wouldn’t say that about their grandchild?

03-22-14 She Looks Up To Us

Granddaughter Glenyce has much to say long before she is able to speak.

by Scott Shephard

She looks up to us.

She is fascinated by us.

She trusts us.

She is amused by us.

She needs us.

Of course, I can’t really speak for our granddaughter Glenyce Jane. At 9 months she can’t yet speak for herself. But her eyes and her expressions have much to say . . . .
